Where harmony starts
Call and response is the first kind of part singing a class can do, because one group only has to answer. It works from PreK. A round is a bigger step: each group has to hold its line while hearing a different one, which is the skill that eventually makes choir possible.
Seven songs here are built on it, including Catching Polar Bears, Miss Sally's Goodbye Song, Who is Next To?, My Dog Treed a Rabbit and How Many Miles To London Town?. The teacher or a solo child leads and the class answers, so nobody has to remember more than one phrase.
Seventeen rounds, from Come Through the Sawmill and Hop Up and Jump Up in the lower grades to Scotland's Burning, Thankfulness and Step, Clap, and Shuffle higher up. Start with two groups, get it stable, then add the third.
Six songs carry simple harmony, including Parlez-vous Français, Paw Paw Patch and the two-part arrangements of Hannukah, Oh Hannukah and Noel Nouvelet. You're a Grand Old Flag is the library's partner song, where two different melodies fit together.
"Good music teaching is not about music. It's about creating joy, humor, and love in the classroom. Music is simply the way to get there."
